Liposuction is now the most popular form of cosmetic surgery in the U.S. Almost 400,000 people undergo the procedure every year, with the percentage of men increasing considerably. The latest trend is all about 'melting the fat away' rather than just 'sucking it out'. This translates to no lengthy hospital stays, less pain and less scarring.
The latest laser procedure that is revolutionizing the liposuction industry is Smartlipo. It relies on the use of Smartlipo machines which disrupt fat cell membranes with lasers which in layman's terms, literally "melts the fat". They say the melted fat is not extracted but is excreted over a period of a few weeks.

Inflammation Causes Decreased Lung Capacity
June 2007 - A group of New Zealand researchers at the University of Otago in Dunedin took measurements of lung capacity and inflammation in 1,000 young adults aged 26 to 32.
They measured inflammation by looking at blood levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) which is a marker of nflammation. Inflammation is also linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Higher levels of CRP were found in those with smaller lung capacities. The association between higher CRP levels and lower lung function was not related to smoking, lung disease or obesity. The authors said ‘To our knowledge, this is the first report of an inverse association between lung function and CRP in young adults.
The association between poor lung function and cardiovascular disease may be somehow mediated by inflammation. Their next step is to establish whether inflammation leads to reduced lung function, or vice versa.
However other studies have already shown that foods high in antioxidants protect against loss of lung capacity. So again the evidence points to eat healthy to slow your aging.

A new bionic hand in which all the fingers move individually is called the i-LIMB Hand. Its made by the United Kingdom's Touch Bionics and it runs off myoelectric, or muscle, signals. Typically, surface electrodes, which look like silver buttons, sit on the person's arm muscles and pick up signals coming from those muscles.
The hand is operated using a strap that goes across the back. By moving the arm, it operates a switch that tells that hand what to do. Grip strength and speed are controlled by software and are programmed into the hand based on the patients requirements.

Future Treatments for Liver Failure
An Australian company is commercializing a drug called Ropren. It was approved in for sale in Russia in July 2007. Trials have shown Ropren - which is derived from pine needles - is highly effective in treating chronic liver diseases including various forms of hepatitis and cirrhosis. Its currently undergoing further clinical trials in Australia to back up years of trials in Russia.
August 2007 - Since gaining regulatory approval to release Ropren in Russia, Solagran has been getting a stream of inquiries from doctors and sufferers around the world. They now say a pricing regime has been developed so that the drug can be supplied outside Russia under the "compassionate use" and "personal supply" regimes of each country.
Solagran's manufacturing partner has agreed to supply the drug once proper approvals are granted at a price in the range of US$3500 and US$6000 for a three month course.
And from a recent Solagran announcement:
"Russia has a real challenge with chronic liver disease. Some 10 million people are affected. Existing treatments are either not sufficiently effective, have serious side effects, or are very expensive and still have high side effects. Ropren offers a treatment that is both effective and free of side effects. Once released in Russia, we expect demand will build rapidly. Many countries, including Australia, will permit residents to import a number of months supply for personal or family use. Thus, the demand could be
even stronger than anticipated." |
