Curing the Blind with Stem-Cell-Coated Contact Lenses

In a world-first breakthrough, researchers from UNSW in Sydney have used stem cells cultured on a simple contact lens to restore sight to sufferers of blinding corneal disease.

Corneal damage from infection, burns and chemotherapy is estimated to be the cause of sight loss in about 1.5 million people every year. These people usually wear contact lenses so it makes sense to deliver a stem cell therapy via those contact lenses. Treating corneal damage with contact lenses is simple and cheap.

Does Number 7 Cream Really Work?

number 7 restore and renew

People all over Britain recently went into a frenzy to purchase a new anti-aging product called Number 7 Restore and Renew.

The cream sold out across the country in March after being featured on a television show and having a low price tag helped as well.

Independent scientists agreed with the makers about what the product can do. "We were astounded to be honest," said Dr. Rachel Watson, a Manchester University researcher. "When we started this research, we were absolutely convinced that nothing could touch the action that we see with medicine that we can use to repair photo-aged skin. So, we were very surprised to see any positive results at all."

No more periods thanks to Lybrel

Hailed by time magazine as one of the top medical breakthroughs of the year, women can now dodge the nuisance of their monthly periods. Its called Lybrel which is a name meant to conjure up the images of liberty. Its made by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and the new contraceptive is similar to the conventional Pill except without the placebo sugar pills making it the first continuous use birth control drug approved by the FDA.

Needless to say, a contraceptive like this is not without controversy. Many have said that a period is the epitome of fertility and femininity, and that stopping menstruation is unnatural. In fact one of the main reasons the original pill had the placebos was because the Vatican was against it for the same reasons.

So time magazine may be right that its a major breakthrough, but its not a medical breakthrough.

Slowing Time Down by Thinking Faster

clockA study earlier in the year showed how more memories are created when the brain is thinking quicker. And more memories mean time appears to drag on for longer. Looking at the other extreme if you are hung over and don't do anything all day, then it will be dinner time before you know it.

When I was a kid the days used to seem so long, but now the days just roll on by. As people age, the brain slows down and I've often heard old people say that years are rolling by. As the brain gets slower and slower, it must seem that you just accelerate towards the end.

So quicker thinking that comes with youth, slows the appearance of time and if prolonged your overall life experienced will be longer.

Killing Cancer with Alkaline Diets of Hot Chilli

Chilli cancer

Its been common knowledge for many years that a healthy diet lowers the chances of various cancers forming. Diets high of alkaline acid (as opposed to acidifying foods) are recommended for both cancer avoidance and as a cancer fighting diet.

Chillies which contain the chemical capsaicin, are an alkaline food. A recent study from Nottingham University (2) has shown that capsaicin kills lung cancer cells. Previous studies at the American Association for Cancer Research (1) had shown a similar effect with prostate cancer cells. Other studies in Japan and China have shown capsaicin directly inhibits the growth of leukemic cells.
