Artefill is a permanent dermal filler injected under the skin for deep facial creases. Produced by Artes Medical, its an improved version of Artecoll, which has been used in Europe and Canada on more than 400,000 patients during the past 10 years. ArteFill was FDA approved in October 2006 for the treatment of smile lines (nasolabial folds). Other off-label uses include lip augmentation, acne scars, creases and folds around the forehead, nose, mouth and eyes.
The makeup of ArteFill is a gel filler consisting of millions of synthetic microspheres (polymethylmethacrylate or PMMA) suspended in purified bovine (cow) collagen. ArteFill also contains a local anesthetic called lidocaine which reduces discomfort during injection.
Because its not a natural body product its not easily absorbed by the body. The microspheres stimulate the body to generate its own natural collagen to encapsulate each individual microsphere, resulting in 80% of the patient's collagen and 20% microspheres (by volume) to permanently fill in the wrinkle.
A typical session lasts 10-20 minutes and up to 3 sessions are required, depending on the size and type of area targeted. The sessions are then typically performed 3 to 6 weeks apart. Recovery is generally instant aside from some slight redness and bruising. However an overnight stay can be required for lip enhancement due to redness, slight bruising and swelling.

Only doctors can perform the procedure and its recommended that you experience the results of a semi-permanent filler before using this more permanent filler. ArteFill treatments can be on the expensive side since its worth US$1,500 per cc. Syringes contain either 0.4cc or 0.8cc, depending on the area treated.
