EOS Imaging System Available for Kids

EOS 3D imagingRady Children’s Hospital in San Diego is the first U.S.-based pediatric specialty hospital to install the EOS ultra-low-dose imaging system. It was cleared by the FDA for pediatric use just last month after it was shown to produce 89% less radiation, meaning 10 times less than a conventional x-ray or 100 times less than a CT scan.

EOS captures a complete body image of both children and adults while standing. It takes two pictures and is then able to combine them into a 3D image. Its the first time doctors have been able to visualize the spine in a weight bearing position in 3D which will aid in better surgical planning.

Peter Newton, M.D. of Rady Children’s Hospital, said "Reduction of radiation exposure is especially important for children and adolescents who have scoliosis or other types of musculoskeletal disorders that are being followed on a frequent basis and therefore need to have regular x-rays over a long period of time to watch the progression of their condition and treatment. A technology that can reduce radiation exposure up to 10 times compared to a conventional x-ray and up to 100 or more times compared to a CT scan is a major breakthrough for orthopedic imaging, especially for the pediatric population."

I thought standing x-rays were low dose anyway because you're always a fair way from the beam. When I got one done for the chiropractor thats what I was told anyway.
