Avita Medical is an Australian company with a product able to treat burns, improve scars or smooth irregular coloured areas of your body, leaving minimal scarring, simply by having a consultant spray on new skin.
Its a clinically proven unique culture technology from which hundreds of patients world wide have already benefited.
Because the new cells are autologous, grown from a patient's own cells, there is no risk of rejection and no risk of disease transmission. In addition, because they are in a spray form, applying the new cells takes just minutes.
"Building block' cells called keratinocytes and those giving the skin its colour, the melanocytes, are harvested from a small area of a patient's skin and then put in suspension to create enough cells to cover the wound or burn. Those cells are then sprayed back on to the wound, where they multiply and create new skin tissue.
The company has packaged their product and called it ReCell. Its an innovative device that enables a surgeon or first aid officers to apply skin cells, collected from a small sample of the patient's own skin, to an area that needs new cells to ensure appropriate healing, skin texture and skin colour.
ReCell produces a suspension that contains all of the cells necessary to promote healthy skin growth. The spray has cells to promote healing (keratinocytes) and cells that reintroduce colour in scars or areas of excess whiteness (melanocytes).
ReCell is a single-use 'off the shelf' kit. It creates an immediate cell population for delivery onto the wound surface and can cover a wound up to 80 times the area of the original donor biopsy. The process is cost and time efficient because it enables cell processing at the site of treatment without the use of specialised lab equipment and staff.
ReCell has mainly been used to treat small burns and scalds, donor sites, glabrous injuries, mild to moderate scars, hypopigmented scars and prophylactically in cosmetic procedures.
Aside the benefits of immediate application without specialised staff, it offers a faster healing time, reduced scarring and repopulation of melanocytes to retain the original skin color.
