DynamicArm TMR
The DynamicArm TMR by Ottobock is a bionic prosthetic arm that is controlled by its operator's thoughts and allows the amputee to feel their lost limb. It went on display recently at a major US science conference.
The TMR gets its name from a surgical procedure called 'Targeted Muscle Reinnervation'. TMR surgery involves taking the nerves that once went to an amputee's arm and hand and connecting them to new muscle sites. This is esentially rewiring the existing nerves and muscles with the prosthetic. The signals from these rewired nerves then allow the patient to control their prosthetic arm. It was developed by Dr. Todd Kuiken.
