In renal dialysis, patients must be connected to machines that mechanically filter off toxins and waste materials from the body. Dialysis does not treat renal failure, but instead keeps a person alive by performing the crucial functions of the kidneys. Chronic kidney failure affects more than half a million people a year in the United States alone, and currently is only fully treated with a kidney transplant. That number has been rising between 5-7 percent per year (dated 2011)
