Face Transplant
Dallas Wiens of Texas has revealed to the media his new face after recieving the first full face transplant in the US. The surgery was paid for by the US Department of Defence, which gave the hospital a $3.4 million research grant for five transplants. They are providing the funding in hope of learning how to help soldiers with facial wounds.
The world's first partial face transplant on a person occured back November 27, 2005. The first Chinese face transplant was conducted in 2006 on a man known as Li after a bear attack.
Each time face transplants have been successful, more and more seems to be attempted. By Dec 2008 the Cleveland Clinic performed the worlds 4th face transplant attempting 80% removal and replacement. In April 2010, Spanish doctors performed the worlds first full face transplant. As of writing about a dozen face transplants have been done worldwide, in the U.S., France, Spain and China.
