Alcohol ProofingAlcohol can be addictive and will causes much harm to the body if used in excess for a period of time. Its easy for people and doctors to tell you to  quit drinking but in reality its much harder to do. However the damage caused by alcohol can be minimized with a few simple tips.

Before drinking alcohol its recommended to take the herb milk thistle which will protect the liver and limit inflammation while drinking. Vitamin B12 and folate will prevent long term nerve and DNA damage.

For the morning after there is a new enzyme-based health supplement called Pepp is now on the market which has been clinically proven to be able to reduce alcohol levels by more than 50% within 40 minutes, reducing hangover effects, eliminating bad breath and promoting general gastrointestinal health.

The Morning After

Its an enzyme-based health supplement which has been clinically proven to be able to reduce alcohol levels by more than 50% within 40 minutes, reduce hangover effects, eliminate bad breath and promote general gastrointestinal health. Its a tried and tested formulation of natural digestive and metabolic enzymes combined with various organic acids, vitamins and nutrients work together to efficiently break down and reduce the alcohol effects, keeping you clear while you’re swinging away between jugs. It greatly reduces hangover. With your alcohol level reduced by more than 50%, it keeps you clearer and fresher the next day. Vitamin B12 and Folate Deficiency

Decreased levels of B12 or folate may be seen with alcoholism. B12 and folate are B complex vitamins that are necessary for normal red blood cell formation, tissue and cellular repair, and DNA synthesis. A B12 and/or folate deficiency reflects a chronic shortage of one or both of these vitamins. The body stores 3 to 5 years worth of B12 and several months’ supply of folate in the liver. Therefore it can take months or even years for deficiencies and their associated symptoms to appear.

Over time, a deficiency in either B12 or folate can lead to macrocytic anemia, a condition characterized by the production of fewer, but larger red blood cells and a decreased ability to carry oxygen. People with this condition may tire easily, be weak, and be short of breath. A deficiency in B12 can also result in varying degrees of neuropathy, nerve damage that can cause tingling and numbness in the patient’s hands and feet and mental changes such as confusion, irritability, and depression.

Treatment for B12 and folate deficiencies frequently involves long-term or lifetime supplementation especially if drinking alcohol is to continue. If deficient in both B12 and folate, he or she will require replenishment of both. If a person with B12 deficiency only takes folic acid supplements, the macrocytic anemia may be resolved but the underlying neuropathy (nerve damage) caused by the B12 deficiency will persist. Left untreated, the nerve damage can become permanent.

Vitamin B12 and Folate Deficiency Poses a Cancer Risk

Alcohol changes the metabolism of two vitamins, folate and vitamin B12. The changes in these vitamins affects DNA stability and synthesis. The effects of excessive consumption of alcohol on folate and vitamin B12 metabolism are well-known in that it depletes the bodies supply.

A lack of these two vitamins is a known CANCER RISK and the association between alcohol consumption and cancer risk may relate to alcohol's role as a folate antagonist and its suppressive effects on other necessary chemical actions in the body.

So its advised to increase the intake of vitamin B-12 to reducing cancer risk by taking a daily multi vitamin. The 25 micrograms of  B-12 in most multiple vitamin tables (some have 50,) is 416% more than the daily requirement. Apparently not toxic even in this dose, but certainly sufficient to not require taking a separate pill.

Herbal Treatments To Boost Liver Function

Milk thistle is a plant that comes from the same group of flowers as the daisy. The seeds of this plant contain an antioxidant called silymarin, which has been used in some herbal remedies for many years. Its believed that antioxidants, which are also found in certain vitamins, help prevent cancer. We do not know this for sure and this is a very difficult thing to prove. In theory, these antioxidants help to prevent body cells being damaged by oxygen particles called free radicals.

Research has shown that milk thistle might help to treat some liver diseases like hepatitis and cirrhosis. However reliable clinical trials need to be carried out before we can be sure that milk thistle will play any part in treating or preventing liver disease or any types of cancers.

Many companies on the internet are claiming that milk thistle can help detoxify and protect your liver. They also claim that it can help protect other organs of the body such as the gallbladder and spleen and that it slows the growth of some types of cancers, including breast and prostate cancer. Scientists are not denying that milk thistle may play a part in treating liver disease and some types of cancers, but a lot more research is needed before we will know for sure.

Although taking milk thistle is generally considered safe, we would not recommend that anyone took it without consulting a doctor first. Women who are pregnant or breast- feeding should not take this herb.

New Wonder Drugs in the Making.

An Australia company is looking to commercialize a drug called Ropren which looks to be available in March 2007. Ropren can help to cure Hep C and regenerate damaged liver tissue caused by alcohol abuse. Its currently undergoing clinical trials in Australia to back up years of trials in Russia. Definitely one to keep an eye on. More information can be found on the Solagran website

Wheatgrass juice has been proven over many years to benefit people in numerous ways. It cleanses the lymph system, building the blood, restoring balance in the body, removing toxic metals from the cells, nourishing the lungs and restoring vitality. One ounce of wheatgrass juice has the vitamin and mineral equivalent of 1kg (2.2 pounds) of fresh vegetables. The deep green juice is abundant with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, chlorophyll and vital life energy. It contains most of the vitamins and minerals needed for human maintenance, including the elusive B12. Many of the benefits of wheatgrass juice stem from the fact that it's a living food, which is a complete protein with about 30 enzymes and is approximately 70% crude chlorophyll. It is intensely concentrated and benefits are seen with as little as one ounce a day.
